Erika has been a part of Beyond Backyard Living since July 2013 but has started full time since graduating with her Bachelors in Nursing in May of 2014. She is constantly listening to webinars, podcasts, and audiobooks to help hone our business practices and has received her Concrete Paver Installer certification as well. Erika helps to ensure that things run smoothly. She is also the face behind the computer screen, handling all of our social media accounts, and also designing and executing much of our marketing materials. In her spare time, Erika loves to host parties and plan events at our office, is a worship leader at their church, and play with her and Steven’s four rescue dogs.
At the age of 13, not 16, I was already immersed in the world of concrete work, specifically focusing on backyard living spaces. Working side by side with my uncle, I learned the ins and outs of the trade. Those early years were filled with the dust of concrete and the sweat of hard work, but they were also filled with invaluable lessons about the trade and life itself.
By the time I was 16, I was running my own business, a testament to the grit and determination I had cultivated. Life then took me on a journey of diverse experiences. I pushed my limits as a professional track athlete and served in the marines, experiences that instilled in me a deep sense of discipline and resilience.
However, the call of the construction business was too strong to ignore. I returned, and by the age of 27, I was at the helm of a successful concrete work company. It was a proud moment, but it was also a moment of realization. I had achieved what I had set out to do, and it was time for a new challenge.
So, I sold my business and took a brief hiatus. But the love for creating, for helping homeowners realize their visions, was still burning bright. At 30, I found myself back in the game, this time focusing on backyard living spaces. I was back to doing what I loved, but this time, it was different. I was not just creating concrete structures; I was creating homes, spaces where families and friends could come together, where memories could be made.
And that’s how I found my true calling – backyard living. It’s more than just a business for me. It’s about creating spaces that bring people together, that foster love and camaraderie. It’s about making dreams come true, one home at a time. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
